Oldoinyo Lengai Trekking

Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai, is an active volcano located near Lake Natron. It is the only volcano in the world that erupts carbonatite lava, making it geologically unique.

This trek is a challenging overnight climb, usually starting at midnight to reach the summit at sunrise. The experience offers dramatic landscapes, steep slopes, and incredible views over the Great Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and surrounding volcanic terrain.

This adventure is best suited for fit and experienced hikers looking for a unique and demanding climb in Tanzania.

Itinerary

After breakfast, depart from Arusha and drive to the Lake Natron area (approx. 5–7 hours). The journey passes through Maasai land with scenic views of the Rift Valley.

Upon arrival, check in at your camp or lodge near Lake Natron. In the afternoon, you may visit nearby waterfalls or relax at the lodge.

Early dinner and rest before the night climb.

Around midnight, begin the ascent of Ol Doinyo Lengai with a local guide. The climb is steep and physically demanding, taking approximately 5–7 hours to reach the summit.

At sunrise, enjoy breathtaking views over Lake Natron and the Great Rift Valley. After a short rest, descend carefully back to the base (approx. 3–4 hours).

After breakfast and some rest at the lodge, begin the return journey to Arusha.
