Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of the most scenic trekking experiences in East Africa. Located within Arusha National Park, the trek offers a combination of wildlife viewing and mountain climbing, making it unique compared to other hikes.
The route passes through forests, open grasslands, and alpine zones, with chances to see giraffes, buffalo, monkeys, and various bird species along the way. The summit, Socialist Peak (4,566m), offers stunning sunrise views and a clear sight of Mount Kilimanjaro on a good day.
This 4-day trek is ideal for acclimatization before Kilimanjaro or for travelers looking for a shorter but rewarding mountain adventure.
After breakfast, you will drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park for registration. The trek begins with a walking safari accompanied by an armed ranger, as wildlife is common in this area.
You will hike through open grassland and forest, passing waterfalls and spotting animals such as giraffes, buffalo, and monkeys. After a steady ascent, you will reach Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, continue trekking through dense forest and into the heather and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you approach Saddle Hut.
In the afternoon, you may take an optional short hike to Little Meru for acclimatization and great views. Dinner and overnight at Saddle Hut.
Very early (around midnight), begin your summit climb to Socialist Peak, the highest point of Mount Meru.
The ascent is steep and challenging, but you will reach the summit at sunrise, with spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape.
After spending a short time at the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for rest, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, descend through forest trails back to Momella Gate. You may again spot wildlife along the way.
Upon arrival, you will receive your trekking certificate and transfer back to Arusha, marking the end of your Mount Meru adventure.
